Spider veins & Sclerotherapy:
Spider veins or telangiectasias small superficial veins, bluish, purple or red in color, usually thread like or tortuous, sometimes forming a net-like network, They most often occur on the thighs, legs and feet, cosmetically unattractive. Unfortunately, these will not go away without treatment, but respond quite well to sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a safe procedure, which has been in medical practice for over a century. The reticular veins are slightly larger than spider veins. They are usually bluish or bluish green, sometimes they act as feeders to spider veins. Both are clearly visible if you have a light skin tone.and very common.
Sclerotherapy is injection of safe sclerosant into the affected veins to cause them to close by fibrosis. This will not adversely affect the circulation as these veins are small and other uninjected local veins are able to drain the area effectively. The sclerosant injected is rapidly neutralized by the blood when it comes in contact with it.
Genetics, pregnancy, hormonal changes, obesity, and prolonged standing or sitting induce spider veins, liver disease can predispose one to develop these.
During sclerotherapy, a safe sclerosing solution called Aethoxysclerol is injected into these veins, which causes the affected vessel to close, fibrose and disappear. The treatment time is about 30-60 minutes, involves the injection with a very fine needle. Local anesthesia is usually not required as it is usually not painful. Post-procedure compression is required for best results. For residual spider veins, treatment can be repeated after 6-8 weeks. There are usually no or minimal side effects after treatment and one can return to work and social life immediately after treatment.
Avoid (non-prescription) aspirin, ibuprofen (Brufen), or other anti-inflammatory medications for 48-72 hours before. However, acetaminophen (Alvedon/Paracetamol) are ol to take if painkiller is needed .Do not discontinue your regular medications without consulting your primary care physician.
